From an Edison light bulb to memory chips: 150 years of the electronics industry, stacked across five floors
This is an electronics museum that Samsung Electronics built inside Samsung Digital City in Suwon. It is easy to assume it is a showroom of the companyโs own products, but the displays start somewhere else entirely: with an Edison light bulb and a Leyden jar, objects made by other companies in other countries at the starting point of the industry. Visitors begin on the fifth floor and work their way down one floor at a time, so the route itself carries you from the age of inventors to the age of corporations and on to the products of today. It is also one of the rare sites on this track that anyone can enter with nothing more than a reservation.

๐ The Story
The museum opened on 21 April 2014, Koreaโs Science Day. It replaced a corporate showroom that had stood on the Suwon campus, rebuilt at roughly four times the size, and what filled the extra space says a great deal about the place: not new products, but artifacts of the electronics industry. An Edison bulb, a Leyden jar (the first capacitor), vacuum-tube radios and televisions, early mobile phones and more make up the roughly 150 objects on display, drawn from a collection of some 150,000 products and documents.
The displays are divided into three galleries plus a company history hall. Gallery 1, The Age of Inventors, occupies the fifth floor and covers the invention of electricity and telecommunications; Gallery 2, The Age of Corporate Innovation, sits on the third floor and covers semiconductors, displays and mobile devices; Gallery 3, The Age of Creation, is on the second floor and deals with the products of now and next. The Samsung Electronics digital history hall stands on its own on the first floor. Because the route runs downward, you physically walk through the sequence in which an individualโs invention becomes an industry, and that industry becomes an object in your hand.
By April 2024, its tenth anniversary, the museum had received some 19,400 groups from more than 180 countries, about 500,000 visitors in all. It is also a stop for visiting heads of state and official delegations who come to look at Korean industry, and that fact alone tells you something: when Korea introduces itself to the outside world, the story it reaches for is electronics.

It is unusual for a corporate museum to put a floor without its own company first. The structure argues that the electronics industry existed as a game before Korea entered it late and changed the standings, which makes the semiconductor section that follows land harder. Reading the way the exhibition is built, alongside what it contains, doubles the interest.

๐ญ Where It Sits in Korean Industrial History
The 1980s and 1990s were the years the axis shifted in Korean industrial history. After the wigs and textiles of the 1960s and the steel and shipbuilding of the 1970s, memory chips and cars moved to the front of the export list, and the basis of competition changed from wages to technology. Samsung Digital City in Suwon is one of the places where that shift actually happened, and the museum sits inside that working campus.
Comparing it with the other site on this track makes its character clear. If NAVER 1784 in Jeongja-dong, Seongnam is the last box on the timeline, the one textbooks have not reached yet, this museum shows you the stretch textbooks already cover, in physical objects. It is worth remembering, though, that this is industrial history arranged by a company. Read what was placed up front and what was left out, and the exhibition itself becomes a document of its era.
๐ Five Minutes Before You Go
The electronics industry existed as a game before Korea entered it late and changed the standings. Carry that sentence down from the fifth floor and you will see what changes at each floor break. What follows is limited to what an ordinary visitor with a reservation can actually see.
- No Korean company on the fifth floorThe first floor you see belongs to Edison and Bell; Samsung is absent. Putting a floor without your own company at the very front is not a common choice for a corporate museum. Notice the arrangement on the way in and the drop in the story hits properly when you reach the semiconductor zone two floors down.
- The change of scale in the semiconductor zoneHold the vacuum tube from the fifth floor next to the chip on the third in your mind. How far a component doing the same job shrank in a single century is the thing this museum makes you feel physically, and it also explains why this particular object sits at the top of Koreaโs export list.
- Two timelines overlapping in the history hallThe ground floor is where you read a companyโs chronology against the countryโs economic one. Recall what was happening nationally in 1969 when Samsung Electronics was founded, in 1974 when it entered semiconductors, in 1983 at the Tokyo Declaration, and the link to the modern history units of the study track is immediate.
- The working campus you cross on the bridgeThe way in is part of the visit. You pass a gate from the third basement level, ride a dedicated elevator to the second floor and cross a bridge into the lobby, and that path runs through a research campus. This is where it registers that the museum is not a tourist site but a room inside a place where people are working.
- Admission is for visitors aged 13 and over, and elementary school children must be accompanied by a guardian. If you were planning a family outing with young children, check this condition first.
- On weekdays you cannot get in without a reservation. This is not a place where you walk through a front gate and buy a ticket: it is inside a working campus, and you need a confirmed booking and the designated route. If you missed the reservation window, Saturday open access is the answer.
- Photography is allowed inside, but screened content and certain areas are off limits, and tripods and flash cannot be used. A visit planned mainly around taking pictures is better spent elsewhere.
- This is a museum built by a company. Knowing that the exhibition looks out from the corporationโs side changes how you read it. Watch what is given space and what is missing, and the visit gets considerably deeper.

- 1Book first (essential for a weekday visit)To visit on a weekday you must reserve in advance on the official website. Bookings open one month ahead and close three days before, so same-day and next-day requests are not possible. If you are going on a Saturday, no reservation is needed.๐ก If your plans are loose, Saturday open access is the easier option. Just remember that last entry is 16:00, so a late afternoon start will not get you in.
- 2Mangpo Station, or the third basement of the parking towerBy public transport, take bus 15-1 from the stop near Exit 4 of Mangpo Station on the Suin-Bundang Line and get off at the Samsung Digital City mobile research center. By car, there is free dedicated parking on the third basement level of the parking tower at the main gate.๐ก On weekdays your booking confirmation is checked at the garage as well. Have it open on your phone and you will not be held up at the entrance.
- 3Through the gate and across the bridge to the lobbyFrom the third basement level you pass the museum gate, ride the dedicated elevator up to the second floor and cross a bridge into the lobby. Since the path leads into a place where people work rather than a tourist attraction, this stretch is already part of the visit.
- 4Start on the fifth floor and come down one at a timeThe route runs downward. You begin at Gallery 1 on the fifth floor, pass Gallery 2 on the third and Gallery 3 on the second, and finish at the history hall on the ground floor. With a docent tour booked, expect 60 minutes and at most 80.๐ก If you are short on time, spend it in the semiconductor zone on the third floor. That is the floor tied most directly to Korean industrial history.
- 5Carry on to Hwaseong FortressWhen the visit ends, Hwaseong Fortress and Hwaseong Haenggung are about 20 minutes away by car. The museum itself does not appear on the Korean History Proficiency Test or in school exams. The stretch the third floor covers does, though: the arc of economic development from light industry in the 1960s through heavy and chemical industry in the 1970s to semiconductors and cars in the 1980s, along with the "three lows" boom of 1986 to 1988, is standard exam material.
