ACT Ⅰ · 뿌리 ROOTS
Every story here begins with one contrast — small land, deep time.
Section 01
Small Land, Deep Time
The size of one U.S. state — with five millennia of history
The country behind the world's most advanced semiconductors is about the size of a single U.S. state — yet its history spans five millennia. The nation that printed the world's oldest surviving movable-metal-type book now leads the global memory-chip market. This contrast is what surprises first-time visitors most.
Land · 국토

About the size of Kentucky, the 37th-largest of the 50 U.S. states — roughly 1% of the total U.S. land area.

📜 A Nation of Records — from Movable Metal Type to Semiconductors
1377 Jikji The world's oldest surviving book printed with movable metal type — some 70 years before Gutenberg.
1446 Hunminjeongeum Hangeul, promulgated by King Sejong — the only script whose design principles survive in writing.

Hangeul: The Scientific Writing System
Created in 1446 by King Sejong · 세종대왕 창제
For ordinary people who had no letters to write down even their grievances, a king created an alphabet himself.
It is the only script in the world whose invention was fully documented.
Hangeul was created in 1446 by King Sejong the Great. Consonants are modeled after the shape of vocal organs, while vowels encode the principles of Heaven · Earth · Human (天地人). UNESCO recognizes Hangeul as one of the most scientific writing systems in the world.

Now Read It — One Syllable = Consonant + Vowel (+ Final)

Hangeul packs letters into one square block to make a syllable: an initial consonant + a vowel, sometimes with a final consonant (batchim). Assemble the sounds and you can read it right away.

++= han
++= guk han + guk = Hanguk — the name "Korea"
++= bap bap — cooked rice, and by extension "a meal"

Try It Yourself — Drag the Letters Into Place

Drag (or tap) the consonants and vowels below into the blanks. Place each one in the right spot and the Hangeul syllable appears.
